A confidence scale is often used at the beginning of the work, especially with those who have difficulty expressing themselves about how they feel, and their emotions. Priority is placed upon explaining that confidence varies from one person to another, and that shyness can run in families.

The student understands that sex may be discussed with the counsellor. People often find it embarrassing to discuss sex, yet it is a driving force of most people’s lives. Young people are fascinated with sex, and student counsellors must feel able to discuss it frankly. If they cannot do this, there will be major ‘blind spots’ in their counselling. All young people have drives and desires that must be satisfied in some way. If they cannot it causes them worries, unhappiness, anxiety, lack of confidence and other feelings that make life difficult.

The counsellor refers these students to specialists – psychologists or psychiatrists – and suggests to parents who ask for help on such matters that they seek specialist advice. If the conclusion is that the student is depressed, or clinically depressed, a doctor will normally prescribe medication, and sessions are arranged with a psychiatrist or psychologist. Collaboration between specialists and counsellor is important, so that the school’s requirements of students will be consistent with their state of health, and in order to maintain contact if a student has to be admitted to hospital.
