Overview of the research program Our research program is comprised of two studies spanning approximately five years. Research was conducted at two child care institutions and the three public schools attended by children from these institutions. A total of thirty-four adults and fifteen children participated, and several participants were followed for the entire research period. The goal of Study 1 was to explore, broadly, the developmental contexts of Japanese children with histories of maltreatment, focusing on the physical and social ecologies of the institutions and schools, adults’ developmental goals for maltreated children, and adults’ and children’s experiences.

She argues that caregivers provide the most optimal conditions for developing secure caregiver-infant attachment relationships within their own Ibasho; that is, caregivers are most sensitive and responsive to their infants in the places where they themselves feel most at peace, calm, secure, and accepted.
