In the adjective "legal" I include all those formally qualified and practicing law, either independently or as employees in the public or private sectors, as well as students preparing to do so and law teachers training them. I exclude the myriad individuals without formal qualifications who perform equivalent functions, such as social workers, tax advisers, police, trade union shop stewards, and accountants. I also exclude those who have qualified but are not practicing law, such as corporate executives.
