Nevertheless, there remain moments of considerable power. The film conveyed the traditional anti-war messages about the brutality of conflict, the suffering of those at the front and at home, the futility of it all.

Within fifteen months, over two-and-a-half million copies were in print worldwide. An advertisement in the New York Times in May  by the publishers, Little, Brown, tied to the film’s release, highlights the extent to which All Quiet on the Western Front had impressed an international audience with its sales.
